Historical origins, institutional development, and legal modernization

Historical origins, institutional development, and legal modernization

The Lisbon Stock Exchange was officially founded in 1769 by decree of the Marquis of Pombal during Portugal’s colonial trading boom. Initially operating as a mercantile exchange, it began formal securities trading in the 19th century with public debt and shares of banks and railways.

In the 20th century, the exchange navigated economic and political shifts. Following the 1974 Carnation Revolution, nationalizations reduced market activity. In the 1990s, economic liberalization and EU membership spurred rapid modernization and regulatory reform.

Regulatory integration and oversight role

The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), created in 1991, regulates the market to ensure transparency, investor protection, and market efficiency. The adoption of the CATS electronic system and the 2002 merger with the Porto Stock Exchange created a national trading infrastructure ready for European integration.

  • 1769: Official founding by the Marquis of Pombal

  • 1991: CMVM established as market regulator

  • 1999: CATS electronic system adopted

  • 2002: Merges with Porto Stock Exchange

  • 2002: Joins the Euronext group

Today, the Lisbon Stock Exchange is a well-regulated, modern venue essential to funding Portuguese companies and attracting international capital.
